Mr. Kamlakar Shenoy has written a letter to the police requesting them to properly investigate a big fraud involving government housing projects in Mumbai. He says that in many such housing projects, some developers and government officers from MHADA and BMC have cheated people by not giving the required flats (called “surplus tenements”) back to the government, which they were supposed to do. These officials allowed builders to continue their work even when these rules were not followed.

Mr. Shenoy says that the police are not investigating properly and are trusting only the MHADA officers’ reports. But these officers themselves are involved in the wrongdoing. The MHADA officers have not followed the law, hidden important information, and given fake or incomplete complaints. They did not make sure that the developers followed the legal steps like signing an undertaking to give back the required flats before allowing building work to start.

He also says that the BMC officers wrongly gave approvals and occupancy certificates to the buildings without checking if the developers followed the rules. Because of this, the public lost property worth thousands of crores of rupees. He points out that many laws were broken and false documents were used to cheat the government and the people.

Mr. Shenoy is asking the police to record his statement, register new FIRs, freeze the bank accounts of the accused, and take strong action. He wants the police to check each housing project again from the beginning and not ignore the main people responsible. He also requests that if he is wrong in anything, he should be informed politely.
