The Supreme Court of India heard a case related to the collapse of an unauthorized construction in Mumbai. The incident occurred on July 16, 2019, and resulted in the loss of lives and injuries. The unauthorized construction was part of a building owned by the Bai Kesarbai Dharamshey Khaku Charitable and Religious Trust. The court noted that the unauthorized construction had been in existence since 1990-1993, and the Municipal Corporation of Mumbai had failed to take action against it.  

The court criticized the inaction of various bodies and questioned whether any authorities would be held accountable. The appellant, a trustee of the trust, was granted bail as he had cooperated with the investigation. The court also acknowledged the dilapidated condition of the original building and the communications between the trust, tenants, and the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) regarding the building’s condition.
